#Malware uses video and tags to infect 100,000 people on #Facebook

Image
Facebook - the world's most active social media website, boasting some 1.4 billion registered users, is no stranger to viral attacks that spread quickly. Over the weekend,  researchers started noticing an uptick in tag spam that was delivering malware to users. The campaign was first noticed on Saturday by researchers at Bitdefender, an anti-Virus firm in Bucharest, Romania. Initially, the three-day campaign was said to have infected just over 5,000 users. However, earlier this week, security researcher, Mohammad Reza Faghani, reported that the number had increased to 110,000 users. The campaign hinges on videos posted on a person's timeline, which tags a number of friends. The videos themselves look as if they are legitimate, and use the goo.gl URL shortening service to mask their true destination. While more experienced, security savvy users would be immediately suspicious; most of the victims followed their gut and trusted the alleged link to Google. "Users who click t

#Kingston's HyperX Cloud II Pro Gaming Headset, Hands On

Image
In October, we got our hands on Kingston's HyperX Cloud Pro Gaming Headset. At the time it was marked down from $149.99 to $79.99. Even without the price drop as incentive, the audio  quality was excellent, and the 3.5mm connections made it easy to plug and play on any smartphone, PC, laptop or game console. Now, HyperX has come out with its successor, the Cloud II. It won't be available until Feb. 9, but I got the chance to play with it before its release. If the original Cloud was any indication of success, the Cloud II seems to deliver the same great audio performance alongside a few new features. The headset in general looks identical to the original Cloud headset. The aluminum frame, leather headband, plastic cover for the drivers and leather ear cups are all black. Even the additional velour ear cups are still included in the box, along with the small bag to house your headset and wires. The microphone jack is still located under the left ear, and it's still sealed w

Super #WiFi Could Use #Television Spectrums To Disrupt Wireless Market

Super Wi-Fi. The words sound pretty great together, don't they? Like a deity. Omnipotent. So powerful. So many possibilities. Two scientists from KIT (Karlsruhe Instit ute of Technology) in Germany have proposed a creation of just that, a Super Wi-Fi, from terrestrial broadcasting. Arnd Weber and Jens Elsner, authors of the article Beachfront Commons, propose to use bands below 2 GHz for free communication, instead of licensing them to large companies. UHF bands originally used for television are being used less and less. In 2008, the FCC auctioned licenses to use portions of the 700 MHz band, which is the spectrum just above the remaining TV broadcast channels. According to a 2012 New York Times Article, AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint said they required more radio spectrums, citing necessity due to growing demand, and they sought FCC approval to buy more at auction. The frequencies they hope to buy are 470-698 MHz. A helpful comparison, which the American public has alrea

Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8.1 users

Microsoft's Windows 10 event is just getting started, and it sounds like the company is eager to make it as easy and cheap as possible for those running older versions of Windo ws to upgrade. Terry Myerson just announced on stage that, for the first year after Windows 10 launches, any device running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows Phone 8.1 will be able to upgrade to the latest version of MIcrosoft's OS — for free. How exactly this program will work isn't clear just yet — it'll certainly be subject to some hardware requirements, particularly for older machines running Windows 7. But a simplified upgrade path will likely do a lot to help Windows 10 adoption — rather than dealing with a number of different versions of Windows and different upgrade costs, most consumers will simply take this free update and enjoy running Microsoft's latest. Beyond this, Myerson shared Microsoft's vision for Windows as a service, not just an operating system. A big part of that
