New Malware Spreads Through ‪#‎Web‬ ‪#‎Advertising‬ Channels

Image
NEWS ANALYSIS: Security researchers find new malware that exploits legitimate advertising channels to attack and compromise computers. Adobe Flash has long been used as a path for attacking computers through their browsers because it's capable of executing code on remote Websites without users realizing it. For this reason, Adobe has been in a constant war to find exploits and block them by providing updates to Flash as quickly as possible. But it's also been possible to keep malware at bay simply by not clicking on a Flash-enabled icon or video. If you didn't click, nothing happened. Now that's changed. Recently, readers of The Huffington Post were greeted with a Hugo Boss ad that simply installed malware, in this case a version of Cryptowall ransomware, when it appeared in the browser. It's worth noting that neither The Huffington Post nor Hugo Boss was involved in spreading the malware. Both were innocent parties. What happened was a malware producer pres

‪#‎Microsoft‬ Backtracks On Default 'Do Not Track' Policy For Future Browser Versions

Image
In a rather surprising, but not completely unexpected announcement today, Microsoft said that it has decided to stop enabling the "Do Not Track" feature by default in its future browser versions (which likely refers to Project Spartan). A few years ago, Microsoft decided to enable the Do Not Track policy by default in Internet Explorer 10 as a competitive advantage over other browsers that l eft DNT off by default. However, the move quickly became controversial, especially because the ad industry didn't like it. The ad industry's argument at the time was that Microsoft should leave the choice to users. Ad tracking can lead to increased revenue for ad networks and content publishers, so enabling DNT by default could have cost them a significant portion of their revenues. However, the main reason that enabling DNT by default couldn't have possibly worked is because "not tracking" wasn't mandatory to ad networks. DNT has always been a policy

‪#‎Samsung‬ Announces Pricing, Availability For New Line Of Curved Monitors

Image
Just weeks after Samsung introduced five new curved monitors to the international crowd, Samsung Electronics America revealed this week that four of those panels will be heading to North America in May 2015. These include the 31.5-inch SE590C Series, the 27-inch SE591C Series and the SE510C Series, which arrives in 23.6-inch and 27-inch flavors. For starters, the SE590C series monitor is the only one  in the batch with a 3000R curvature; all of the others sport a curvature of 4000R. All of these monitors have a resolution of 1920 x 1080, a response time of 4 ms, a refresh rate of 60 Hz and support for 16.7 million colors. Other similar traits include a 16:9 aspect ratio, 178-degree viewing angles, HDMI input and a headphone jack. As for individual specifications, the two SE510C Series monitors have a typical brightness of 250 cd/m2, a static contrast ratio of 3,000:1 and a VGA port. Both come in black and sport a curved T-shaped stand. Samsung proprietary tech includes MagicBr

‪#‎Ossia‬'s 'Cota' Technology Promises Wireless Charging Up To 30 Feet Via Wi-Fi Or Bluetooth

Image
A company called Ossia that focuses on wireless charging announced today a new breakthrough technology called "Cota." The system can charge devices remotely up to 30 feet by using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antennas as receivers. This would save OEMs and ODMs money as they don't have to integrate any new antennas into their devices to receive the power wirelessly. According to Ossia, all that's needed to integrate this new technology are slight modifications to circuitry and the device's firmware. Because Cota has a range of 30 feet, it can charge all devices situated in a typical home or office room simultaneously. The system needs a charger and a receiver (inside the devices) to work. The receiver sends omnidirectional beacon signals to find the Cota charger. Once the charger is found, it returns "thousands of targeted signals that build pockets of energy at only the precise locations of the beacons' origins," according to Ossia. This sort of prec

‪#‎Intel‬ Unleashes NVMe SSD 750 Series For Consumer PCs

Image
The PC storage world was undeniably boring, and spinning, before SSDs came along. SSDs were expensive and somewhat exotic at first, but still worth every penny. SSDs deliver revolutionary speed that unlocks the true potential of the CPU, and you cannot seriously claim to have a performance PC today if it doesn't have a slab of flash attached to the SATA port. Therein lies the problem. The SATA connection was designed for old spinning HDDs and not optimized to provide the ultra-low latency and blistering speed that SSDs crave. SSDs outstripped the limitations of the trusty old SATA port over the last few years, and prices have dropped to the point of commoditization. New SSDs are only making small incremental gains with each release, and it seems the days of big performance boosts are over. ...until NVMe came to save the day. NVMe is a refined interface designed from the ground up for non-volatile memories, which includes DRAM and future PCM/MRAM, and it runs over t

Solid State Drive (SSD) vs Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

Image
SSD Vs HDD Comparison Now it’s time to do some comparisons and determine which might be best for your individual needs - SSD or HDD?  The best way to compare items is a table with a side by side comparison of items in which a green box indicates an advantage: Attribute SSD (Solid State Drive) HDD (Hard Disk Drive) Power Draw / Battery Life Less power draw, averages 2 – 3 watts, resulting in 30+ minute battery boost More power draw, averages 6 – 7 watts and therefore uses more battery Cost Expensive, roughly $0.10 per gigabyte (based on buying a 1TB drive) Only around $0.06 per gigabyte, very cheap (buying a 4TB model) Capacity Typically not larger than 1TB for notebook size drives; 1TB max for desktops Typically around 500GB and 2TB maximum for notebook size drives; 6TB max for desktops Operating System Boot Time Around 10-13 seconds average bootup time Around 30-40 seconds average bootup time Noise There are no moving parts and as such no sound Audible clicks and spin

Is ‪#‎Chrome‬ OS Graduating To The Big Screen?

Image
Acer doesn't seem to be afraid of taking chances. Take its Aspire A3 for instance: it's a 21.5-inch all-in-one (AIO) desktop powered by Google's Android platform and a backup battery. Essentially, consumers can use it as a large Android tablet, taking it from room to room without much fuss. Acer also took a chance with Google's Chrome OS, and now the company is one of the leading Chromebook manufacturers in the industry. So it shouldn't be any surprise that Acer introduced an AIO desktop running Chrome OS called the Chromebase. Unfortunately, the company hasn't provided full specs, so we're not sure what this machine will include hardware-wise outside of the few details the company offered in the announcement. Acer revealed that the Chromebase series will rock a 21.5-inch Full HD screen with 178-degree viewing angles and 10-point touch input. The AIO will be powered by an Nvidia Tegra K1 quad-core chip (that's right, a Tegra chip in an AIO) and

‪#‎Club3D‬'s CSV-3203 Ultrabook Docking Station, Hands On

Image
Club3D's SenseVision CSV-3203 is a universal DisplayPort- and USB-based docking station for Ultrabooks that carries a $150 price tag. The question is, is it worth it? If you're someone accustomed to working on a desktop but had to switch to using a laptop as your primary PC for one reason or another, you may also miss your dual-monitor setup, especially if your laptop only has one display output. Fortunately, this doesn't mean that you can't use your setup at all. If your laptop has a DisplayPort 1.2 interface, you can use the DisplayPort MST protocol to drive up to four 1080p displays off of that one output. Today, we're taking a look at Club3D's SenseVision CSV-3203, which is aimed at helping users suffering from the problem described above. Introduction To DisplayPort MST And Club3D MST stands for "Multi-Stream Transport," a protocol that is part of the DisplayPort 1.2 standard, which was announced in 2009. This means that most de

‪#‎WesternDigital‬ Offers External Gaming Console Storage With My Passport X

Image
If you own an Xbox One, chances are you're racking up quite a collection of games and getting close to the 500 GB storage limit. There is the option of opening up the console and swapping it out for a larger storage drive, but that takes a lot of time -- not to mention that opening up the console could void your warranty. Fortunately, Western Digital made an external hard drive just for the console g amer. The My Passport X features USB 3.0 and a whopping 2 TB of storage. The large amount of space should be ample room for a number of titles; paired with the 500 GB of in-console storage, it gives you a total of 2.5 TB. You can also choose to install your favorite games on the My Passport X, so you can bring it to a friend's house and play titles on their Xbox One without having to reinstall it on their system. You would expect the drive to work on most computers and consoles, but the product page shows (and a Western Digital rep confirmed) that the drive isn't compa

‪#‎Samsung‬ Releases m.2 And mSATA 850 EVO SSDs

Image
Samsung refreshed its popular 850 EVO series with slim m.2 and mSATA flavors. The new pint-sized offerings are perfect for laptops and Ultrabooks and come in capacities of 120 GB, 250 GB, and 500 GB for both m.2 and mSATA. The mSATA EVO also offers a capacious 1 TB model. The drives interface via mSATA and m.2 connectors, but they're still SATA-based SSDs. The new variants offer similar performance specifications to the 2.5" mod el, and speed varies with capacity. Maximum sequential speeds weigh in at 540/520 MBps read/write, and random performance peaks at 97,000/89,000 read/write IOPS. The new SSDs continue to leverage the now tried-and-true Samsung TLC 3D V-NAND. The Samsung-proprietary 32-Layer 3D NAND offers more endurance, performance, density, and lower cost in comparison to typical 2D NAND. Last week, a flurry of 3D NAND announcements came out, but for now Samsung is the only company in the world shipping finished 3D NAND products. Samsung boosts endurance a
